On Wednesday, May 1, KION North America and ��ҹ�첥 Southern University held a signing ceremony at KION NA’s stateside headquarters in Summerville celebrating a new tuition discount program. The memorandum of understanding offers KION NA employees a 25 percent discount for a degree program at ��ҹ�첥 Southern.

“This opportunity extended to KION NA employees is a symbol of ��ҹ�첥 Southern’s dedication to meeting the needs of our workforce,” Keith Faulkner, president of ��ҹ�첥, said. “By partnering with KION NA, we are able to provide pathways in career advancement. This is an investment in students and our community and furthers our goal to serve international businesses right here in the ��ҹ�첥 metro region.”

All permanent, full-time employees of KION NA who are accepted by ��ҹ�첥 Southern University can enjoy a 25% reduction of tuition for all traditional on-campus undergraduate programs as well as ��ҹ�첥’s online undergraduate degrees including hospitality and tourism (BS), management (BS), professional studies (BS), project management (BS), and student ministry (BA).

In addition to undergraduate degrees, employees can also choose from 17 online and on-campus graduate programs, including biology, business, business analytics, computer science, leadership, nursing, and supply chain management. Daniel Schlegel, vice president of operations and customer service for KION NA, said that Global ��ҹ�첥 is important to the community and to ��ҹ�첥 Southern. He shared a personal story of being an immigrant from Germany—first on a work visa and, ultimately, successfully working toward American citizenship. During his acclimation to life in the United States, he had a few roadblocks due to lack of guidance.

Nubuya begins scholarship to assist black women studying computers and technology

Junior, senior, and graduate black women enrolled in computer science or a technology-related degree or a graduate program within the College of Math and Science with financial need may be eligible for a new scholarship, The NEXT IT GIRL in Memory of Karen Vaughn Endowed Scholarship.

Funded by alumnus Napiya Nubuya ’14 and her organization, The NEXT IT GIRL, the scholarship recognizes the efforts of the late Karen Vaughn, who helped start the organization.

While at ��ҹ�첥, Nubuya was inspired by Dr. Valerie Sessions, current director of graduate study in computer science, and the only female computer faculty member while Nubuya was in college. Sessions remains one of Nubuya’s most valued mentors in the field of computer science. Entering the workforce, Nubuya continued to see a need for women and people of color in the technical world.

These experiences led her to form The NEXT IT GIRL organization and establish a scholarship at ��ҹ�첥.

New FAFSA form now available

As a current or prospective ��ҹ�첥 Southern University student or parent, you’ve no doubt heard of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as FAFSA.

The U.S. Department of Education opened the soft launch of the new FAFSA form Dec. 31, 2023, for the 2024-2025 academic year. FAFSA is used to determine how much financial aid individual students are eligible to receive. According to the Department of Education, “The new FAFSA form will significantly improve, streamline, and redesign how students and their families use the form. More students will be able to access federal aid,
including helping 610,000 students receive Federal Pell Grants for the first time.”

Dr. Tony Turner, ��ҹ�첥 Southern vice president for enrollment, said, “The new changes to FAFSA are meant to streamline the process of completing the application and reduce the time to complete it. The changes are intended to understand better a student’s accurate financial picture to award more federal aid than before. The best advice is to take your time filling it out but do it soon since many state and institutional aid programs depend on the FAFSA information to maximize your opportunity for federal, state, and institutional aid.”

Incoming and current students must complete a FAFSA form each year of higher education attendance. It is estimated that more than 17 million students will be completing a FAFSA form, so be patient if there are delays in logging into the site. ��ҹ�첥 announces tuition promise program, first private university in SC to cover tuition

��ҹ�첥 Southern University announced the launch of Buc Promise, a new renewable scholarship for Pell-eligible South Carolina residents with a minimum 3.5 high school GPA. The only private university in South Carolina making this tuition guarantee, ��ҹ�첥 Southern will cover the remaining costs of tuition after Pell and other gift aid are applied during a student’s four years at ��ҹ�첥. The program kicks off with the incoming Fall 2024 class.

“Higher education is the pathway to purpose,” President B. Keith Faulkner said. “As a first-generation college student and an alumnus of ��ҹ�첥, I can relate to the challenges and choices that so many students face. ��ҹ�첥 Southern is where I earned the opportunity for a better life, and our commitment to creating an affordable and accessible private Christian higher education experience for South Carolina residents is a decision that will impact generations to come. Students eligible for Buc Promise must:

Be a resident of the State of South Carolina

Buc Promise is renewable each year, provided the student maintains eligibility.

��ҹ�첥 Southern named to USNWR Best Colleges List

U.S. News & World Report  has once again named ��ҹ�첥 Southern University to its Best Colleges list for 2024 in the Best Regional Universities in the South, Best Colleges for Veterans, and the Top Performers on Social Mobility. ��ҹ�첥 Southern was also named to the national Best Bachelor of Science in Nursing category.

��ҹ�첥 Southern University focuses on student success using a Passport to Purpose program. The Passport to Purpose is designed to help students discover their passion, design their pathway, develop their potential, and declare their purpose, enabling them to embark on a life of significance after graduation.

New $17k Christian studies scholarship available to 25 recipients this fall

The College of Christian Studies at ��ҹ�첥 Southern University has a new scholarship opportunity for prospective students interested in Christian ministry degrees. The Call to Ministry Scholarship is an annual award of $17,000 and will be offered to 25 recipients in fall 2023.

Dean of the College of Christian Studies Dr. Ben Phillips said this scholarship is the newest, most exciting way in which ��ҹ�첥 Southern is showing the world what ��ҹ�첥 is about. “We are a Christ-centered university that exists to serve the church and the world with the gospel,” he said. “It is our way of helping those who are hearing the call of God into vocational ministry to focus on the ministry and not just cost.”

“��ҹ�첥 is committed to helping train the next generation of pastors, missionaries, and other parachurch ministry leaders to go out into the world to share the Gospel,” Dr. Anthony Turner, vice president for enrollment and marketing, said. “This scholarship aims to reduce the financial burden so students can launch into ministry quickly after graduation.”

In order to be eligible for the annual amount, applicants must declare a traditional major from the College of Christian Studies, and recipients must commit to remaining at ��ҹ�첥 and studying in the College of Christian Studies for all four years (or until graduation). Ultimately, a student may receive $68,000 in total from this scholarship program.

“College is expensive, and no one goes into ministry to make big paychecks, so the cost of college is an even bigger concern for families sending their student into full-time Christian ministry,” Phillips said. “This new scholarship will enable students to answer God’s call to prepare for ministry without the need to take on more debt.”

According to Phillips, 30% of Southern Baptist churches have an opening for full-time ministerial staff that remain unfilled. Nationally, the number of college students preparing for full-time vocational ministry has been trending lower. However, the number of students in the College of Christian Studies has increased.

Phillips explained that the scholarship will help maintain that trend within ��ҹ�첥’s Christian studies degree programs.

“At ��ҹ�첥, students who are called to ministry will find themselves surrounded by students and faculty who are the kinds of Christ-like servant leaders our new students want to become,” said Phillips. “They will build relationships and skills that will encourage, support, and challenge them for the rest of their lives, no matter where God takes them.”

For some ��ҹ�첥 students, that path may take them to seminary. ��ҹ�첥 offers a partnership with six Southern Baptist seminaries where ��ҹ�첥 students may reduce their seminary degree courses by as many as 33 hours (or one year).

��ҹ�첥 one of two SC colleges to provide self-diagnostic kiosk on campus

��ҹ�첥 Southern University has installed a free self-diagnostic medical kiosk in the Student Center that provides the campus population fast and safe 24/7/365 access to self-diagnostic COVID tests.

Through a partnership with LTS Health, based in Virginia, ��ҹ�첥 becomes one of only two universities in South Carolina to offer the TestandGo^TM kiosks—available at no-cost to the consumer, regardless of one’s insurance status.

Students, faculty, and staff can secure self-diagnostic tests from the kiosk by following a simple, four-step process:

Register for your test by either using a mobile device, online portal or by following the prompts on the kiosk.
Collect dispensed test and follow the directions in the package to administer your test. Once completed, seal the package back up.
Return to the kiosk and scan the QR code on the package. Then, place it back into the collection unit.
Receive results in 24-48 hours either by text or email.

LTS Health helps universities, trade schools, and other academic institutions with safe and quick access to testing via kiosks, available through grants and direct payments as well as state and federal funding.

“By providing COVID-19 testing and vaccination services to 55% of the U.S. population, LTS saw first-hand how social determinants can create real and meaningful barriers to communities’ access to quality health care,” said Tammy Anderson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at LTS Health. “We created TestandGo^TM kiosks to overcome disparities in economic stability, neighborhood environments, social contexts, and education opportunities to ensure all individuals have equal access to high quality medical tests and services.”

For now, only COVID tests will be available. However, the university hopes to add a variety of tests as a benefit to the campus population. The tests are FDA EUA approved and accept third-party payer billing—including Medicare/Medicaid. There is live customer support and multilingual capability on the kiosk.

Anderson believes this proactive approach to self-diagnostic testing is just the beginning. “TestandGo^TM kiosks have the potential to revolutionize the health care system,” she said. “LTS is incredibly grateful to our academic partners across the U.S.”

Tuition insurance available to ��ҹ�첥 students and families

��ҹ�첥 Southern University partners with GradGuard to offer students and their families peace of mind when the unexpected happens. During the pandemic, students worldwide were faced with financial risks—and universities like ��ҹ�첥 sought to offer insurance and assurance for those worried about investing in their education and future during a turbulent time in human history. Tuition insurance protects that investment.

GradGuard provides reimbursement when a student is unable to complete a semester due to unforeseen circumstances such as an accident, injury, illness, or other covered reason. Eligible covered expenses include tuition, room and board, and other fees.

��ҹ�첥 Southern University student Allison Brown, a sophomore biology major from Patrick, South Carolina, has been selected to receive a CIC/UPS Scholarship provided by the SC Independent Colleges & Universities (SCICU) and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, DC.

Brown said she is deeply appreciative of this financial support. “I’ve been provided an opportunity to continue pursuing my dreams with minimized hurdles,” she said. “It has provided for me less financial stress, more free time to focus on my classes and studying, and time to truly experience college and create bonds that I will have for the rest of my life.”

After graduation, Brown wants to either continue pursuing graduate studies or jump straight into a career that she enjoys. “I want to be excited to come into my job every day and fully interested in what I’m doing. As a STEM major, I think I will find just that.”

Nationally, CIC, through the CIC/UPS Educational Endowment, provided more than $1.4 million in student scholarships to support student success at private colleges and universities. This year, SCICU awarded $64,000 in CIC/UPS Scholarships to 20 low-income, first generation, minority, and new American students at private institutions across South Carolina.

��ҹ�첥 Southern University students and families will have the option to protect their investment with the launch of a partnership with GradGuard™ and its Tuition Protection Plan™ beginning this fall.

The plan provides reimbursement for tuition if a student is unable to complete an academic term due to sudden illness, a flair up of a chronic illness, mental health conditions, or other covered conditions. A renter’s insurance policy that protects students’ belongings will also be available.
